RWANDA OPENS GISHWATI – MUKURA NATIONAL PARK FOR TOURISM.

The desire to diversify and build a vibrant tourism sector in Rwanda, there was a need to add on the number of tourist sites for more experiences for guests to enjoy on their safari in RwandaTravelers that love to encounter primates are to once again explore a virgin tracking area for more fun as Rwanda adds another tourist destination on their itinerary. This desire led to the introduction of Gishwati – Mukura national park.

Gishwati – Mukura national park is the newest park in Rwanda to be opened for tourism. This park will officially be opened next year to visitors and it brings to a total of 4 national parks in Rwanda thus expanding her tourism menu, complementing gorilla trekking in volcanoes national park, tracking chimpanzee in Nyungwe forest national park and game viewing in Akagera national park.

This new park is positioned in the highest ridges of the Congo Nile Divide along the Albertine rift. And it is not only important for biodiversity conservation but also in preserving and improving ecosystems. 

The spectacular Gishwati – Mukura national park is found in Ngororero and Rutsiro districts in the northwest of Rwanda. It harbors more than 60 species of trees.  Also incredible faunal species like olive baboons, chimpanzees, blue-monkeys, black-and-white Colobus monkeys, plus over 130 bird species. It is comprised with wide range of exciting safari activities like chimpanzee tracking, forest hiking and nature walks, primate watching and cultural experiences, among others.

Every traveler planning to spend a holiday in Rwanda in the near future, should include this park. And this park is set to be one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Gishwati – Mukura national park has a powerful comeback story. It’s sad that it was almost depleted as a result of resettlement, illegal mining within the forest and livestock grazing.

Before traveling to any destination of your choice, it is better to first understand the best season for visiting. And so is the case if you’re planning to visit Gishwati – Mukura national park. The climate of the park is very friendly hence favoring traveler’s safaris and tours.

The park experiences 2 seasons every year. Dry season is considered as the best for one to explore the natural wonders in this protected area. The park’s temperature ranges from 25 to 27 degrees Celsius. And at night, it drops to 13 to 16 degrees Celsius. The travelers interested in primate adventures must visit this park during dry season.

Both seasons have an advantages and disadvantages. Wet season is good, it is a period when there is plenty of food for wildlife to feed. This makes it easier for one to trek unlike the dry season when they move longer distances looking for food. However, the dry season is the best. The the park’s habitat in this season remains relatively dry and favorable for visitors to embark on primate expeditions.

The locals in the communities that surround the park are so friendly and welcoming, plus their activities that await to entertain you. Some of the interesting activities include, performance of traditional dances, music and drama, visiting traditional healers, participation in preparation of traditional food and so much more.
