The Ngorongoro conservation  area is a massive protected area located in the crater highlands of Tanzania near Arusha.  The crater are in abundant in wildlife making it one of Tanzania’s safari destinations.

The Ngorongoro conservation  area was established in the year 1959 after being cut off from Serengeti national park. It is listed as a heritage site currently administered by the Ngorongoro conservation authority.  It is located in the crater plains of Tanzania with the nearest city of Arusha.

In the early years, the crater area was inhabited by the Mbulu people 2000 years ago and the Datooga people 1700 years ago. These people where later driven out of the crater area by the maasai people in the 1800’s. Ngorongoro conversation are was not home to the foreigners till in 1892, where the plains of the Ngorongoro was visited the Europeans. Oscar Baumann was the first European to visit the area. Later the Germany brothers; Friedrich siedentopf and Adolf came settled and farmed   until the world war one.

The interest of protecting the wildlife in the crater area led to the up bring of ordinance in 1921 to restrict hunting in the park. In the early years their existed hunter gathering that were displaced by pastoralists. In 1928 hunting was completely prohibited in the Ngorongoro conservation area expect in the former seidentopf farms. In 1951 there was an Ordinance of Serengeti national park and in 1979, the ordinance of Ngorongoro crater area happened.

The area was separated from Serengti national park to protect the wildlife and at the same time give land for settlement for the maasai. Later in 1974 the crater area was listed as a UNESCO world heritage site.   The later years, conservation efforts for the Ngorongoro conservation area are still in check to protect the wildlife in the area putting in mind the compensation of the Maasai people.

The Ngorongoro conservation area covers an area of 8292 square kilometers. It is located near the Serengeti and the nearest city if Arusha town. The main attraction and highlight for the conservation area is the Ngorongoro crater.

The Ngorongoro crater was found by eruptions of Ngorongoro Mountain two to three million years ago. The crate is the world’s largest inactive caldera with an area 260 square kilometers of the floor. The crater floor is 1800 km above sea level.

Term Ngorongoro come from a local idea of the first Masai, the term came from a cow bell sound (Ngoro ngoro0 for the Maasai were the major pastoralists of the area.

Game viewing

The Ngorongoro conservation area is a home to a number of wildlife species. These can be viewed while on a game drive through the plains of the area. Game drives in the Ngorongoro area are scheduled for the morning and evening session and by 4:30 pm are tourist are required to evacuate the crate. The crater is home to about 25000 wildlife mammals. These include the wildebeest, Zebra, rhinos, lions, buffaloes, hippos and many more. All these are sighted while at a game drive.


A birding experience in Ngorongoro conservation area is a one of the exceptional activities not to miss on a Tanzania wildlife safari.  There are over 287 birds’ species in the area with 2 endemic species and 8 near endemic species. Birds include the Augur buzzard, Rosy throated long claw, fan tailed widowbird, Black winged lapwing, hildebrandts starling, verreaux eagle, scarlet-chested sunbird, northern anteater chat, Egyptian vulture, greater flamingo and many others. The best time for bird watching if from November to April. In these months resident bird species are present and migratory birds coming from Europe can be sighted in the Ngorongoro conservation area.

Leria fever tree forest

This is one of the unique attractions located in the conservation area. This forest consists of a rare acacia tree species. The acacia type located in the Leria fever is tall, yellow in color and small in size. This kind of acacia is not seen in large volumes in other African parts but largely in the Ngorongoro conservation area. The forest is the best spot to sight the black rhinos, hyrax, bushbucks and elephants.

Lake Magadi

Lake Magadi is a magical destination for birders in Tanzania. This is one of the bird paradise in the country.  It swallow base in home to a number of wading birds including the famous pink flamingos and pelicans.

Olmeti and Emapakaai crater

This swallow crater is idea for hiking and nature walks around the Ngorongoro.  It is a grazing ground for maasai herdsmen.  A view of buffaloes, elands, reedbucks and bush bucks can be seen while at this place.  The Empakaai crater was formed by volcano that collapsed into a caldera. This caldera is 6km wide. The crater attracts a number of birds and wildlife that include the flamingos that come to the area due the algae, blue monkeys, water buck, hyenas, bush bucks and many others.

Olduvai Gorge

The Olduvia gorge is an important archeological site, this is where the first remains of hominids where found by Richard Leakey in the early 20th century. A visit to this site gives an opportunity to see the hominid foot prints on a volcanic rock. These foot prints are recorded to be more than 3 million years old.
